Shopping Trip with RCHD – 13 April 2019

We had our second shopping trip with the residents from the Red Cross Home of the Disabled on 13 April 2019. A shopping trip to a shopping mall may be something we do weekly, but this is extremely rare for the residents. When we knew that the last time they visited a mall was a year ago when we brought them out, I know we have to do this again.

It took us quite a while to find a suitable shopping mall. The hypermart we went last year has closed down and it didn’t help when many malls we visited are not wheelchair friendly. Either the lanes are too narrow or there are steps. So thankful to have found Giant@IMM – really huge and spacious, with plenty of rooms to wheel the residents around.

After shopping at Giant hypermart, the residents get to explore IMM before they have lunch at Kopitiam foodcourt.

Kudos to all volunteers who contributed time and love to the residents from RCHD, without which this shopping trip wouldn’t have been possible. You know that you have made their day when there is endless chatters and laughters throughout the entire trip. The excitement that lit their faces is priceless when they got wheeled them around the hypermart.

Each resident is unique. One likes to draw and spent a long time at the stationery section. Another loves oranges, the volunteer got her laughing by placing 10 tangerines into her shopping basket (of cos we took out some at the cashier). Another only wants a watch – the volunteer got him one from Daiso and he was really proud of it… the list goes on..

黄帝内经有云:“年过四十,阴气自半也”。意思是说当我们已步入中老年时期,应该注重养身了。以前不怎么注意的生活作息也要开始整理整理了。人的衰老是一种自然规律,长期劳作,作息失常,导致机体退化,阴精渐少。有些人开始出现口干舌燥、腰酸、五心烦热的阴虚症状。有的则出现夜尿多、怕冷、腰膝酸软的阳虚症状。这些是病理状态,需要找医师好好调一调。

中医注重养身,但贵在治未病 – ”上医治未病,中医治欲病,下医治已病”。在中医理论里,养身得先养心,不要茫然吃补。“下士养身,中士养气,上士养心”。心为一身之君主,藏神。静得下这颗心,便可豁达,无惑即安和。少了情志上的困惑,一半的病都能引刃而解。

在阴瑜伽的练习里,我们里外兼施:外则伸展四肢,疏松筋骨,濡养关节。内则以经络学为基础来促进气血运行,内观呼吸法来静心安神。阴瑜伽练习不局限于灵活的四肢或高柔软度。只要有心学,必可受益无穷。

Hip Anatomy and Yin Yoga workshop

69282098_2390907574339632_8559957030238945280_nBryan Ng of The PainFree Clinic – Osteopath Singapore conducted a Hip Anatomy & Yin Yoga workshop at The Be.Live Practice on 17 March 2019. He covered the anatomy of the hip, skeletal variations, function of the joint segment, and the implications of this functionality for our yoga practice. Students got to explore the range of motion of their hips and explore the implications of these skeletal variations in various yin poses.

At The Be.Live Practice, we aspire to bring yoga to a wider community regardless of age, gender and physical limitations. With a better understanding of their body structure, we can better embrace our limitations, listen to our body and love the body that is uniquely ours.

Mindfulness Meditation and Yin Yoga workshop

The Be.Live Practice and Cheen (now your mind) held a workshop on 9 December 2018 to share the basics, benefits and science about Mindfulness Meditation and Yin Yoga, as well as to share technique to improve awareness of our mind and body, and to unwind tensions held in the body.

Mindfulness Meditation and Yin Yoga share a common approach to explore and experience the whole body, regardless of physical condition or level of fitness. With regular personal practice, we will develop deeper awareness and sensitivity to our bodies, working at limits of what we can do at any given moment.

MRI scans show that after an eight-week course of mindfulness practice, the brain’s “fight or flight” center, the amygdala, appears to shrink. … As the amygdala shrinks, the pre-frontal cortex – associated with higher order brain functions such as awareness, concentration and decision-making – becomes thicker. And as the “fight and flight” center starts to shrink, we switch on the “rest and digest” (aka parasympathetic nervous system)mode.

Gayatri Mantra is about bringing light into the mind to dispel darkness, which is to say negative energy fields and unconscious patterns. Light is a metaphor for awareness and shining light (awareness) on the darkness (unconscious patterns and things that hold us back in life) is the intention of Meditation.

The Be.Live Practice celebrated Diwali with a special Candlelight Yin class. Apart from our usual yin yoga practice, Jensen introduced Nada (sound) yoga. Sound is a powerful healing force. It can remove blockages in our energy system and bring us back to balance. We ended the evening with a wonderful spread of food and laughter 😁.

Pink Night Yin Yoga

October is Singapore’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast Cancer is the #1 cancer killer of Singaporean women and in the latest cancer registry report released in 2017, it was estimated that 1 in 14 women in Singapore will develop the condition before the age of 75. The Be.Live Practice dedicated our last practice in October (earlier this evening) to all courageous women whom have fought this cancer and to their family members and friends for their love and care.

Myofascial Release and Yin Yoga workshop

We are really grateful to have all mats filled this morning for the workshop. I am glad to have the opportunity to share my knowledge on fascia with a group of very receptive participants. We talked about how we can leverage on the principles of Yin Yoga and myofascial therapy balls to better release the tight knots in our body.

Breathe: Spreading Love through Yin Yoga

A Be.Live fundraising initiative for the Parkinson Society Singapore (PSS).

It was a day filled with love, compassion and humility. More than 30 people turned up that beautiful morning, to practice and to give. We are also very glad to have PSS centre manager (Siew Hiong) come share about the society with the participants. It was humbling to hear what the centre does to educate the public, and to support the patients suffering from Parkinson Disorder.

At the start of the class, I shared a personal story to set the intention for the class:

Few months back when I was assisting my teacher in a Yin yoga immersion workshop, I befriended a participant who is plagued with Parkinson Disorder for years. After the workshop, I wrote “ ….让我深深感动的是认识了班上的一位患有帕金森氏症的同学。这十年来,她坚持练习瑜伽来延缓肌肉退化。没有因为病魔而变得怨天尤人,反而成为我们班上的开心果。我们每个轻而易举的动作,对她而言是吃力的。我们简单的更换一个体式,她却要以颤抖的双手,扶着地上慢慢的移动。她没有气馁,反而有时还苦中作乐。我敬佩她的不屈服不放弃,永远抱着一颗接受自己,活出自我的精神。今天课程结束前,她以颤抖的双手拿出一个装满小饰品的袋子,贴心的送了我们每人一个,是为了答谢我们对她的帮助与耐心。顿时,我眼眶湿了。我反而要谢谢你为我上了趟宝贵的一课。你让我更懂得感恩,惜福。临别时我告诉她,「记得继续好好爱自己,我们都是不完美中的完美」”

In this practice, we are not concerned with our physical shape in the posture. [“How low can we go?”, “How far can we stretch?”] – We set an intention to throw these questions out of our mind. Instead, we focus on our breath to get re-connected with our body. We adopt a curious attitude as we journey into body, heart and mind: “Where are the area of tightness?”, “What am I feeling now?”, “What are my thoughts?”. We being to experience a state of ease when we start to access our inner beauty, and derive strength from within.

At the end of the session, a participant who was diagnosed with PD 17 years ago, shared about her experience with Yin yoga. Her determination to practice, her internal strength to stay positive, and her jovial outlook of life is an inspiration to many in the room. When I turned to look at her husband, I see love and commitment.

With Love. Compassion. Humility, I teach.

My heart was full that morning. I was reminded on why I choose to spread the goodness of Yin yoga. I see the rippling effect of Yoga beyond the physical domain. One that transcend beyond those funky poses that not many people can achieve in the first place.

Be.Live charity event with Red Cross Home of the Disabled (20 May 2018)

A shopping trip to a shopping mall may be something we do often. However, this is a rare opportunity for the residents from the Red Cross Home of the Disabled to visit a mall. We brought 14 residents to Giant@Vivocity to experience shopping.

The rain didn’t dampen our mood… The volunteers went all out to ensure that the residents stay dry despite the heavy downpour.
